paradise tree snake Chrysopelea paradisi What will u do when a snake, a flying snake passes flying over you?Yeah it can be one of the worst things in your life. But believe me if you know then it’s not so dangerous.Flying snake is a very beautiful snake and does not harm human being.Let’s know some thing about it and I am sure it will develop a bud of interest in you.

 Do they really fly??

This is a major question which arises about this snake. Then the answer is no.actually they do not fly they don’t have feather or any such organ which can help them to fly. They just glide. They flatten the body twice than the normal and jump from the tree to other tree and direct the body by slithering in air.

Places:galden tree snake Chrysopelea ornata

They are found in subtropical jungles where they can find the high trees.South Asia south East Asian jungles are their major home and found in jungles only.

Species:

There are five known species of flying snake scientifically known as chrysopelea.

Golden Tree Snake or Ornate Flying Snake hrysopelea ornat

Paradise Tree Snake, Chrysopelea paradisi

Twin-Barred Tree Snake or Banded Flying Snake, Chrysopelea pelias

Moluccan Flying Snake, Chrysopelia rhodopleuron

Indian Flying Snake, Chrysopelia taprobanica

How do they look?

They are superbly camouflaged as there color is mixture of green brown red etc.Very thin and length is not much. The longest snake of this family is golden tree snake which can grow upto 4 feet while the smallest is just two feet long.  You can find all five in India.

 Venom:

They are very mild and are no threat for human lives.the flying snakeTheir poison is just enough for killing its prey like gecko and lizards, small birds. But one thing I would like to tell you that they are very aggressive and attack very often if they are disturbed. Though u is not going to suffer much of its poison yet it may cause some pain and a swollen finger.

 What do they eat?

They prey on small vertebrates which live on tree like lizards, frog, and small birds.

Fangs:

They have fangs but you can see it properly twin barred tree snake Chrysopelea pelias without opening its mouth.

There fangs are at the rear part of the mouth and it’s not hollow as many poisonous snakes do have like, such snake are called opistoglyphous.

These snakes you can see are very beautiful and harmless but despite of all this they are suffering because of human invasion in their land. Most part of Asian jungles is axed and their natural habitat is in danger.

They are among most endangered species of the world. They need our help so that when we pass through jungles we can have a glimpse of this beautiful snake.
